Make Reducing the Risk of Nuclear War a High Priority – Take Action

Urge your members of Congress to cosponsor the Markey-Lieu bill, which would prohibit the president from launching a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war from Congress.    Take Action

President Donald Trump—like every president for decades—has sole authority to launch a US nuclear attack. And no one—literally no one—has the authority to stop such a launch. The saber rattling between the United States and North Korea is a stark reminder of why this is so outrageous and unacceptable. It’s time to change this deeply flawed system.  Urge your member of Congress to limit the president’s power to start a nuclear war. Congress must get more involved, working to reduce nuclear risks and prevent a nuclear catastrophe.   Other resource – Pax Christi   Reality of Nuclear War

Catholic Church’s World Day of Peace – January 1, 2017

peace-on-earth-detailPope Francis has chosen “Nonviolence: A style of Politics for Peace” as the theme for the 50th World Day of Peace, commemorated each year on January 1st . This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Catholic Church’s World Day of Peace. Inspired by both St. Pope John XXIII’s encyclical Pacem in terris and his own encyclical Populorum progressio, Pope Paul VI introduced the commemoration of the World Day of Peace in 1967; it is now celebrated every year on the first day of January.

Ask Congress for an end to Israel’s demolition of Palestinian property

Please take Action
The Israeli practice of demolishing Palestinian property to make way for Israeli settlements is threatening more and more villages and neighborhoods throughout the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Demolishing homes and property causes untold suffering for Palestinian families and communities and does nothing to further the prospects for a just peace.

Indigenous Activist Berta Caceres Assassinated in Honduras

Let us walk in solidarity with the people of Honduras
On the night of March 3, Honduran environmental and indigenous leader Berta Cáceres was brutally murdered in her home. As co-founder of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH), Berta had led the Lenca indigenous communities to fight for the integrity of their indigenous territories. She was a 2015 recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize, awarded each year in recognition of the courageous efforts by persons from around the world to defend and protect the rivers, forests and lands from devastation due to destructive practices of governments and transnational corporations.
For years, Berta and the Lenca communities fought to block the Agua Zarca hydroelectric dam. She had been persecuted and received numerous death threats for her work. Her murder is one of over 100 unprosecuted murders since 2010 of organizers working to defend the lands and rivers so that the Honduran people can have sustainable opportunities and not have to migrate.

Take Action: Contact your Senators – Oppose H.R.4038

Action Alert:
Your U.S. Senators need to hear from you that you oppose H.R. 4038 and other bills that would stop or halt the resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees.
Action: Send a message to your U.S. Senators .

Dear Senator,
Please oppose H.R. 4038 or similar legislation which would halt the resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees in the U.S.

Background: In the aftermath of the violent attacks on Paris, 31 governors made public statements that they wanted resettlement of Syrian refugees halted in their states. Days later, the U.S. House of Representatives, with comparable intentions, passed H.R. 4038, The American Security against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act, which would effectively halt all resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees in the United States for a protracted time.

Action Alert: Tell Congress to Support the Iran Deal

As the media reports almost daily, the international Iran nuclear accord is under attack by many members in the U.S. Congress. The diplomatic agreement with Iran establishes a process for the international community to monitor Iran’s nuclear energy program to assure it does not lead to making a nuclear bomb and places many limits on the program. In exchange, sanctions against Iran will be gradually lifted. Although it is not a perfect agreement, many in the faith community, as well as many nuclear experts, see this as a critical moment for turning toward peace and advancing diplomacy over war.
