The Senate Finance Committee passed their version of the tax bill November 16th on a straight partisan vote. The full Senate will take up the bill shortly after Thanksgiving. In addition to its horrible tax provisions, it also includes a partial repeal of the ACA that would cause 13 million to lose coverage and raise premiums. Additionally, the bill would result in $25 billion in cuts to Medicare and put many other human needs programs at risk for devastating cuts. A vote is anticipated by Thursday, Nov. 30.
This week (October 29-November 2), people of faith across the country are participating in a national Week of Prayer and Action With Dreamers. Co-sponsored with others in the Interfaith Immigration Coalition, we are concentrating on and elevating the moral voice in support of the DREAM Act of 2017 (S.1615 and H.R. 3440. )
The Senate is expected to vote sometime next week(Sept 25) on a new effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with legislation that would leave millions of Americans without healthcare coverage.
Please email your senators and urge them to vote “no” on this proposal and to work instead in a bipartisan manner to stabilize the insurance market, strengthen and expand health coverage, and improve affordability.

In our world today, 65 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes, and 34,000 additional people are displaced every single day. The need to welcome refugees to the United States has never been greater. Now is the time to take a stand.
A number of refugee resettlement and protection organizations are launching a Stand With Refugees call-in campaign leading up to World Refugee Day on June 20th. During this week, people can call via 1-844-4STAND5 to be connected with your Members of Congress and urge them to welcome refugees. Please visit www.StandWithRefugees.US and call our lawmakers to send a powerful message: We welcome refugees.
Haitians living in the U.S. are at stake. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will decide by May 3 whether or not they intend to renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, which would allow our Haitian sisters and brothers to continue living and working here. TPS protections are given for extreme circumstances such as natural disasters; for Haitians, these protections expire in July 2017. This DHS decision also will set an important precedent, as TPS protections for Salvadoran and Hondurans expire in 2018.
Urge your members of Congress to cosponsor the Markey-Lieu bill, which would prohibit the president from launching a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war from Congress. Take Action
President Donald Trump—like every president for decades—has sole authority to launch a US nuclear attack. And no one—literally no one—has the authority to stop such a launch. The saber rattling between the United States and North Korea is a stark reminder of why this is so outrageous and unacceptable. It’s time to change this deeply flawed system. Urge your member of Congress to limit the president’s power to start a nuclear war. Congress must get more involved, working to reduce nuclear risks and prevent a nuclear catastrophe.
