Thanks to the persistence of advocates like you, the Obama Administration and the House Republican leadership are struggling to find enough votes to pass the fast track trade bill in the House of Representatives.
Please join in a day of action with other faith and secular advocates to continue the pressure on Representatives, urging them to vote “no” on a bill that would speed international trade agreements, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) through Congress. A vote is expected next week (June 8th).
Votes on the fast track bill are not expected until next week(June 8th), but Members of Congress who are still undecided will likely commit this week on whether or not to grant the president (and future presidents) “fast track” trade promotion authority to negotiate international trade agreements quickly and secretly.
Please call 1-888-410-0619 to connect to your Representative.
Sample script: Hi, my name is (NAME). I’m a constituent from (CITY) and very concerned about fast track legislation and the Trans-Pacific Partnership that it would help move through Congress with little debate or amendments. Please vote NO on H.1890, the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015.
We also are monitoring attempts to water down human trafficking protections in the current Fast Track Bill approved by the Senate. Only last week, Malaysian authorities announced the discovery of 28 sites that they suspected have served as human trafficking camps. Days earlier, they found 139 grave sites, many apparently filled with the bodies of dead migrants who had been smuggled from Myanmar.
The fact that politicians are trying to lower the bar and make it easier for countries like Malaysia to join the TPP without addressing human trafficking is just one example of how this agreement puts profit before people.
