On Tuesday, May 27th, 2025 Connecticut’s state Senate passed a bill updating the “Transparency & Responsibility Using State Tools” (TRUST) Act, following the House’s approval the week prior. For the first time since its 2013 creation the TRUST Act includes an enforcement mechanism—an essential step toward ensuring federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents cannot use our state or town law enforcement to tear families apart through deportations.
However, we must also name our disappointment. Despite strong support from lawmakers, Governor Lamont blocked additional critical protections, including a ban on ICE activity in state courthouses and restrictions on the sharing of residents’ personal data with immigration authorities. These are not meaningless demands; they are common-sense protections that reflect our values of dignity, safety, and justice for all. These are not meaningless demands—they are common-sense protections that reflect our values of dignity, safety, and justice for all.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to push for bold, comprehensive protections for immigrants in Connecticut. Partial measures are not enough. We call on our state leaders to meet this moment with courage and urgency.
