The first two opportunities mark the kickoff of our Public Theology Conversation Series. For each conversation, we will be joined by intellectuals, organizers, and public figures to discuss the challenges (and opportunities) that face our nation, and how our values might spur us into action in pursuit of justice. Each session will also be participatory; we will learn and create knowledge together. We will provide recommended – but not mandatory – reading or listening beforehand.
- October 22, 4:30 – 5:30: “The Latinx Catholic Church & the US-Mexico Border,” with Milton Javier Bravo. We will discuss global migration, the refugee crisis at the border, and how the Hispanic Church is responding to the times. We recommend that attendees listen to this two-part retrospective on the 2019 El Paso massacre. Click here for Part 1, and click here for Part 2.
Milton is the director of audience development at Commonweal Magazine, and a lecturer in philosophy and theology. He is completing his dissertation at Fordham University on the cultural and religious practices of young Hispanic Catholics. Click here for Zoom registration.
- October 27, 4:30 – 5:30: “Black Lives Matter & the Catholic Church,” with Olga Marina Segura. We will discuss this summer’s uprising, the broader movement for Black lives, and how both speak to Catholic Social Teaching. We recommend that attendees read Olga’s essay for America Magazine, “What Black Lives Matter can teach Catholics about racial justice.”
Olga is the opinions editor at National Catholic Reporter, and author of the forthcoming Birth of a Movement: Black Lives Matter and the Catholic Church. Click here for Zoom registration. - Finally, we are committed to participating in a day of nonpartisan civic engagement by phone banking in the runup to the November presidential election. We invite you to do the same! Reclaim Our Vote is a nonpartisan voter outreach program of the Center for Common Ground, an organization dedicated to empowering underrepresented voters to participate in our democracy. Reclaim Our Vote is focused on providing up-to-date information to potential voters in battleground states. The organization provides a script and all necessary training information. Select a day to volunteer with Reclaim Our Vote that best works for you.
