Have you heard of the Poor People’s Campaign? There is a national revival happening right now of Martin Luther King’s original Poor People’s Campaign. He was organizing this campaign when he was assassinated in 1968. He had a vision of dismantling systemic racism and taking on systemic poverty by demanding better wages and conditions for workers. Petitioning the government to create an Economic Bill of Rights to address poverty was also a key component of the campaign.
Martin Luther King envisioned a new March on Washington as part of this effort: “This march was to demand better jobs, better homes, better education—better lives than the ones they were living.” (Poor People’s Campaign website).
The current campaign is about creating a national moral revival movement to “shift the moral narrative”, and is focused on economic, racial, and ecological justice. Read about the fundamental principles here. There will be 40 days of moral direct actions, centered around a weekly event at CT State Veterans Memorial in front of the LOB, Hartford on Mondays at 3pm. There is no event on June 4th. The next event will be on June 11th.
The weekly themes are:
Week One (May 13-19): Someone’s Hurting Our People: Child Poverty, Women, and People with Disabilities. See details here.
Week Two (May 20-26): Linking Systemic Racism and Poverty: Voting Rights and Immigration
