ACTION ALERT
Message: Contact your House Representative and Senators and ask them to oppose any cuts and alterations to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Background:
The House of Representatives and the Senate issued draft budget resolutions for the Fiscal Year 2016 this week, and both budgets proposed significant and dangerous alterations to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
• One such alteration is to turn SNAP into a “State Flexibility Fund,” or block grant. This would, starting in 2021, turn SNAP into a discretionary program, making it vulnerable to funding competition each year after that.
• The other change, which is tied to discretionary funding, is the loss of all money for outreach, used to try to enroll families who don’t know they are eligible or who are afraid to apply for SNAP benefits.
SNAP remains one of the most effective anti-poverty measures in the United States. It is one of the most responsive safety net programs to economic problems and the vast majority of persons who receive it live below the poverty line.
With this critical program in danger, let us join our voices with others and ask Congress to support SNAP !
Please take a few minutes and let your elected officials know that you oppose any cuts and alterations to SNAP.
