The Collaborative Center for Justice invites its members to advocate for the passage of the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act of Connecticut. If passed, the CTVRA will make Connecticut a leader in fighting racial discrimination at the ballot box, and promoting democracy for all. It will be one of the most comprehensive voting rights bills in this country.
Next Tuesday, advocates and lawmakers will formally kickoff the 2023 campaign in the Legislative Office Building. Collaborative Center staff will be in attendance. Join us!
Date: January 31, 2023 Time: 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Location: Legislative Office Building; Hearing Room 1E (300 Capitol Avenue, Hartford CT 06106.)
Advocates hope for a bill that will:
1. Create legal tools and resources to investigate cases of voting abuses.
2. Create a “preclearance program” that evaluates whether certain voting changes will not harm voters of color before going into effect.
3. Provide additional tools and resources of language assistance for non-English speakers.
4. Create strong protections against voter intimidation and obstruction.
5. Create a central hub that has accessible data for elections.
Action Items: If you plan to attend, please meet CCFJ staff, Dwayne and Kimberly, in the rotunda of the Legislative Office Building at 9:40 a.m. E-mail us at advocacy@ccfj.org to confirm. We encourage everyone to reach out and urge their legislators to help pass the CTVRA this legislative session. Click here for more information on the CTVRA. Click here to contact your legislator.
